Eyes on Health
UMD Community Service
Eyes on Health was founded in August 2014 by a small group of UMD students who wanted to be able to do more in the community, specifically in the healthcare section. Since then, it has grown to establish programs with partner federally qualified healthcare clinics (FQHCs) in the D.C. area to give students the opportunity to volunteer and gain more experience at. We are currently looking to partner with new clinics and make the process to get clinical exposure for students a lot easier!
About Us
Why This Club Was Founded
In the summer of 2014, I volunteered at the Baltimore Rescue Mission Clinic, which served the homeless and medically underserved populations of Baltimore. It was an invaluable experience in which I got to have a direct positive effect on people while learning about the medical field at the same time! Every week I talked to and helped the homeless people who came to clinic. I took their vitals and patient histories, present cases, and most importantly, helped them get the medication and care they need—under professional supervision, of course. This experience truly solidified my desire to be a doctor. It has also made me really wish there were similar opportunities near campus so that other students could also have meaningful experiences like this. Since there weren't any, I decided to create some. Thus, I made Eyes on Health, which is unique in that it's main and only focus is on regular and active community involvement. We are dedicated to direct service in community healthcare centers.
We aim to be a club that can actually help make an impact on people’s lives and well-being.
